Opening a mission call is one of the most special and anticipated moments in the life of any missionary. It’s a time filled with excitement, nerves, and profound spiritual reflection as it marks the beginning of a new chapter in a missionary’s life. This call reveals the destination where they’ll serve for 18-24 months, and it can be just about anywhere in the world! While many dream of serving in far-off places, it’s important to remember that each call is inspired and tailored to the individual’s strengths and opportunities for growth.
In the culture of the Church, we often talk about being called to serve in a particular country, such as Argentina, Poland, Korea, or the United States. But as a wise quote reminds us, “A missionary is not called to a place; rather, he or she is called to serve. As the Lord declared through the Prophet Joseph Smith in 1829, ?If ye have desires to serve God ye are called to the work.?” This profound truth emphasizes that the destination is secondary to the mission itself: to serve and bring others closer to Christ.
For many, there’s a tradition of opening the mission call surrounded by family and friends, celebrating the moment together. However, everyone experiences the Spirit differently, and it’s crucial to create an environment that fosters spiritual sensitivity. For my mission call, I chose to open it with just my parents and brother. This intimate setting allowed me to focus on the Spirit without the distractions that can come from a larger gathering. I felt a deeper connection to the divine guidance behind my call, and it was a peaceful and memorable experience.
If you’re preparing to receive your mission call, here are a few tips to help you make the most of this sacred moment:
- PRAY PRAY PRAY – Constant prayer will help you align your heart with God’s will and find peace in whatever call you receive.
- Talk to Friends and Family – Hearing about their experiences can provide comfort and insights as you prepare for your own moment.
- Decide the Best Setting for You – Whether it’s with a small group, a large crowd, or in solitude, choose the environment that will help you feel the Spirit the strongest. Remember, there’s no right or wrong way?it’s about what feels best for you.
- Read Alma 17 – The story of the sons of Mosiah as they begin their missions is inspiring and can provide valuable lessons and motivation.
No matter where you’re called to serve, trust that it is the right place for you. God knows each of us perfectly and places us where we can grow and where we are needed. The journey of a mission is not just about the destination but about the growth, service, and experiences that shape us along the way.
Embrace the call with an open heart, ready to serve wherever you’re sent. It’s an opportunity to make a difference and to experience the joy of sharing the gospel. As you prepare for this life-changing adventure, remember that the Lord has a purpose for you, and your mission will be exactly what you need it to be.
